Letters, 1858-1860, to Paul Cezanne.

Three unpublished youthful letters addressed by Zola from Paris to Cezanne in Aix comprise: a 4 p. letter (1858 Feb.) evoking Mardi Gras in the capital; a 3 p. fragment (1858 July), including a poem about their shared youth and a challenge to Cezanne to employ a rhyme scheme provided by Zola (Cezanne's response is in a letter published by Rewald); and an 8 p. letter addressed also to Baptiste Baille, again with a poem, "Le Diable ermite," and schoolboy jokes and reminiscences, but also with lengthy soul-searching on Zola's part and comments on Cezanne's state of mind.
